New Ka'iulani Film and 'Iolani Palace Pictures Print E-mail

ImageMany requests have come in by email asking us to post pictures of what the 'Iolani Palace looks like this week.  There is a new film about the life and times of our Princess Ka'iulani that wraps up it's shooting at 'Iolani Palace this weekend.  It's about the Princess and the time where the Kingdom of Hawai'i is overthrown; and the Princess' efforts to get that turned around.

There is even a small little controversy surrounding the film and script...you can see the video and the writeup on it that was done by Hawai'i Television station KGMB9

Shooting is taking place inside of 'Iolani Palace, but also outside where on the grounds of the palace.  To do this, they created some of the original conditions of the palace, the most visual being they brought rocks and filler to take away the concrete roadway in front of the palace.  To illustrate this, we have provided some historical photos of the palace back in the day and a picture taken of the palace on a normal day.

The next set of pictures were taken on the palace grounds, trying as much as possible to only get the palace and none of the surrounding trucks or film crew equipment (they had taken a break from filming, or were not filming at all when these were taken).

...And finally the exact same pictures you saw, but doctored a little using photoshop to recreate some vintage shots of what perhaps the palace did look like.  I was happy to be taking these shots when the Hawaiian flag was on top the palace.  It would have hurt too much to take these photos when say the US flag was on top of the palace if they were doing a re-creation and filming of the overthrow.  Don't get me wrong, I'm a diehard American, but I'm also Hawaiian too; to see any other flag on top of the palace would have been hard, taking into consideration the history of the palace and the overthrow which still affects Hawaiians and their generations afterwards today.  That is also something that resonates amongst a lot of Hawaiians today.
